This handmade Burqa presents needlework technique blending with symbolism. This piece tells the story of the mysterious look of women from Southern Iran. Those women hide behind masks to shield the beautiful shine in their eyes. They wear these burqas to keep their distance from strangers, and to remain in the shadows. The history of the burqa dates back to over 2000 years ago in the south of Iran. The newer generations of women these days have boldly emerged and begun to unmask illuminating their beautiful faces. However, many of the older generations of women in Iran still hide behind the burqa. Each color of the burqa has an important significance. For example, the red represents marriage worn mainly by younger unmarried women. The black is mostly worn by married women or widows.
